## Prompt 1: you

I'm learning Spanish at an evening class and we have a vocabulary test in six weeks. I'd like my own flashcard app that I can use in a web browser on my laptop and on my phone on the bus. I've never made anything like this and I'm not technical.

What I'd like:
- flashcards with a Spanish word on one side and the English on the other, and I tap or click to flip them
- a quiz mode that tests me on the cards and gives me a score at the end
- a way to add my own cards as we learn new words each week
- it should remember my cards when I close it and come back. I don't want to make an account or sign in to anything.

I want it to be free to run. Before you make anything, ask me anything you need to know, and tell me in plain English what you're going to make.

### Claude

Here's what I'm planning to make, followed by a few questions before I start.

## What I'll make

A single web page, saved as one file, that works like a small app. It will have three parts:

1. **Flashcards:** You see a Spanish word. Tap or click and the card flips to show the English. Then you move on to the next card.
2. **Quiz:** It tests you on your cards one at a time and gives you a score at the end, such as "14 out of 20". It will also show which ones you got wrong so you know what to revise.
3. **Add and manage cards:** A simple form where you type the Spanish and the English. You can also fix a typo or delete a card.

**Remembering your cards:** Your cards are saved inside your browser, on the device you're using. You won't need an account or a login, and nothing is sent anywhere.

**Cost:** It's free. The page works on a phone and a laptop, and you can put it online for free (I'll explain how, step by step).

## Questions

1. **Syncing between devices.** Because there's no account, cards you add on your laptop won't automatically appear on your phone, and the other way round. There are two easy ways to handle this:
   - **A.** Use it mainly on one device, probably your phone, and add cards there. This is simplest.
   - **B.** I add "Export" and "Import" buttons so you can copy your cards from one device to the other when you want to. It takes a few taps.

Which do you prefer? If you want true automatic syncing, that needs an account or a server, which goes against what you asked for.

2. **Starter cards.** Do you want me to include a starter set of common beginner vocabulary, or begin with an empty deck so you only have your own words? If you want a starter set, tell me the topics you've covered, such as food, family or numbers.

3. **Quiz style.** Which would you like?
   - **Type the answer:** you're shown a Spanish word and type the English. This is better for learning, but typing on a bus is fiddly.
   - **Multiple choice:** you tap one of four options. This is quicker on a phone.
   - **Both:** you pick one at the start.

4. **Direction.** Do you want to be tested Spanish → English, English → Spanish, or be able to switch? The test may ask you to produce Spanish, so the second one is worth practising.

5. **Accents.** Spanish uses characters like á, é, ñ and ¿. If you'll type answers, should I add small buttons for those characters? Should the quiz mark "cafe" as correct for "café", or insist on the accent?

6. **Getting it onto your phone.** Are you comfortable creating a free account on a hosting site like GitHub or Netlify? That account would only be for putting the page online, and the app itself would still need no login. The alternative is that I give you the file and you open it directly. That works on a laptop but is awkward on a phone.

7. **Extras.** These are optional, and I'll skip them if you don't want them:
   - Marking cards as "hard" so you can practise just those
   - Shuffling the cards
   - Dark mode for the bus
   - Working with no internet or mobile signal (I'd recommend this one)

If you aren't sure about any of these, just say "your choice" and I'll pick sensible defaults. For example, I'd go with both quiz styles, both directions, an empty deck, export/import, and offline support.

---

## Prompt 2: you

Thanks, that sounds right. My answers:

1. B, please: Export and Import buttons.
2. Yes, please make up a starter set of about 20 beginner words so I can see how it works: greetings, food, family and numbers. I'll add our class words myself.
3. Both, and I pick at the start.
4. I'd like to be able to switch.
5. Yes to the accent buttons. Mark "cafe" as right for "café", but show me the correct spelling.
6. Yes, I'll put it online with free GitHub and Cloudflare accounts later, so I can open it on my phone.
7. Shuffling and marking cards as hard, yes. No dark mode, and it doesn't need to work offline.

Please make it now. Keep it as simple as possible: something I can open by double-clicking and later put online, nothing I have to install. It must be easy to use with my thumb on a phone.

### Claude

*[Claude saved the file `index.html`]*

*[Claude edited the file `index.html`]*

Your flashcard app is built as a single file called **index.html**. I couldn't open it in a browser from here, so I haven't tried it out. Please click through each part when you first open it, and tell me if anything looks wrong.

**To use it:** double-click `index.html`. Nothing needs installing.

## What's in it

**Cards tab**
- Tap the card to flip it.
- **Back** and **Next** buttons move between cards.
- You choose whether you see Spanish or English first.
- There's a **Shuffle** option.
- There's an **Only cards I marked hard** option.
- A **☆ Mark as hard** button sits under each card.

**Quiz tab**
- You pick **Multiple choice** or **Type it**, the direction (Spanish → English or English → Spanish), all cards or hard only, and 10, 20 or all questions.
- At the end you get a score like "14 / 20".
- It lists the ones you missed.
- It offers **Practise the ones I missed**, and a button to mark them all as hard.
- When you type answers, "cafe" counts as right for "café", and it shows you the correct spelling.
- If a word has more than one right answer, type them in the card as `hello / hi` and either will be accepted.
- In English → Spanish typing, accent buttons (á é í ó ú ñ ü ¿ ¡) sit under the box. Tapping them won't close your phone keyboard.

**Manage tab**
- Add cards with the Spanish and English boxes and the accent buttons.
- Edit, delete or star any card in the list. The newest cards appear at the top.
- **Export:** download a file, or copy your cards as text.
- **Import:** choose a file, or paste the text. It adds new cards and skips ones you already have. It never deletes anything.

**Starter set:** 20 beginner words covering greetings, food, family and numbers. You can delete or edit any of them.

## Things to know

- **Your cards are saved in the browser on each device.** The laptop and the phone each keep their own set. Use Export and Import to copy between them.
- **The online version starts as a fresh copy.** The copy you open by double-clicking and the copy you put online are separate. When you go online, export from the laptop copy and import on the phone. Do the same whenever you want them to match.
- **Private browsing mode won't save your cards.** The app shows a warning if saving doesn't work.
- **Spanish → English typing:** you type the English, so the accent buttons don't appear.
- **Articles count when typing Spanish.** For "el pan" you need to type "el pan", not just "pan".

## Putting it online later

1. Create a GitHub account and a new repository.
2. Upload `index.html` to it.
3. In Cloudflare, go to **Workers & Pages**, create a **Pages** project, and connect it to that repository.
4. Cloudflare gives you a web address to open on your phone.

I can walk you through those steps one at a time when you get there.

---

## Prompt 3: you

I opened it by double-clicking and flipped through a few cards. Before I start relying on it for my test, please check it carefully, as if you were me on a small phone on the bus, and as if you were trying to find mistakes: every button and option should do what it says, the quiz should mark answers and add up the score correctly, the cards I add should still be there tomorrow, and copying my cards from the laptop to my phone should bring everything across. Also look for writing that's too small or too faint, anything that spills off the side of the screen, and anything that would trouble someone who uses a screen reader or only a keyboard.

Tell me in plain English what you found, then fix it in the file.

### Claude

*[Claude saved the file `index.html`]*

*[Claude edited the file `index.html`]*

I read through the whole file line by line and fixed what I found in `index.html`. **I couldn't open it in a browser or on a phone from here, so none of this has been run.** Everything below comes from reading the code, not from testing. Please run through the checklist at the end on your actual phone.

## What I found and fixed

**Things that could have caused trouble in the quiz or with your cards**
- **Empty answers:** Tapping Check with nothing typed counted as a wrong answer and moved on. It now asks you to type something first.
- **ñ:** The "forgive accents" rule would have accepted "ano" for "año", which is a different word. Now "cafe" is still accepted for "café", but ñ has to be typed as ñ.
- **Two answers on one card:** If you typed a card's whole answer including the slash, such as "hello / hi", it was marked wrong. That is now accepted.
- **Two tabs open at once:** A stale tab could overwrite cards you'd just added in another. The tabs now stay in step.
- **Damaged saved data:** The app now ignores broken entries instead of crashing.
- **Import:** Pasted backup text with extra words around it (for example copied from a message) is now handled. A backup with no cards in it gives a clear message instead of saying "Done: 0 added".
- **Android file picker:** I removed a file-type filter that can grey out your backup file on some Android phones.
- **iPhone copying:** I made the "Copy as text" fallback more reliable on iPhones.
- **Quiz position:** The page now jumps back to the top for each new question. Before, on a small phone, you could be left looking at the bottom of the page.

**Too small, too faint, or spilling off the side**
- **Contrast:** The inactive tab labels, the green flipped card, the small grey hint text, and the gold "hard" star were all too pale against their backgrounds. I darkened them.
- **Small text:** I made the small labels bigger.
- **Card list on narrow phones:** The word and its Edit/Delete/Star buttons were squeezed together. The buttons now drop onto their own line when there isn't room.
- **File chooser and paste box:** Both are now kept inside the screen width.
- **Fast tapping:** Quick double-taps on buttons no longer trigger zoom.

**Right and wrong answers shown only by colour**
- **Quiz options:** The right and wrong options now also get a ✓ or ✗, so they can be told apart without seeing colour.

**Screen readers and keyboard-only use**
- **Flashcard:** The flashcard was labelled "Tap to flip", which would have hidden the actual word from a screen reader. That label is removed. The word and each flip are now read out.
- **Quiz and cards:** Quiz results ("Correct!" or "Not quite…"), your final score, and added or deleted cards are now announced.
- **Focus:** Starring a card in the list used to throw the keyboard focus back to the top of the page. It now stays put. After a delete or a new question, focus goes somewhere sensible.
- **Controls:** The option buttons say whether they're selected. The tabs say which one is current. The accent keys are grouped and labelled.
- **Focus outline:** There is now a clear outline on whatever is focused.
- **Languages:** Spanish words are marked as Spanish so they're pronounced properly.

## What I checked and found fine

- **Quiz scoring:** The score goes up once per correct answer, and each missed card is listed once. "Practise the ones I missed" and "Mark these as hard" use that same list.
- **Fewer cards than asked for:** Choosing 10 questions when you have only 7 hard cards gives a 7-question quiz that scores out of 7.
- **Multiple choice:** The wrong options never repeat the right answer, and it works with as few as 2 cards.
- **Saving:** Every add, edit, delete, star and import saves straight away.
- **Export and import:** Both carry the Spanish, the English and the "hard" flag, and importing never creates duplicates.

## Things I can't fully promise

- **Check "remembered tomorrow" yourself.** Close the browser completely, reopen it tomorrow, and confirm your cards are there. The two things that most often break this are:
  - **Clearing browsing data:** Clearing your history and site data wipes the cards.
  - **Moving or renaming the file:** Some browsers treat the double-clicked file as a new site if you move or rename it. Keep it in one place, or use the online version.
- **Cards you change on the laptop won't update on the phone.** Import only adds cards. If you fix a typo on the laptop, the phone gets the corrected card as an extra, and the old one stays. Cards you delete on one device also stay on the other. Delete them there too.
- **Download a backup every week or so.** Use Manage → Download file.

## Quick checklist for your phone

1. Add a card with an accent, such as "¿Cómo estás?" / "How are you?", then close the browser and reopen it.
2. Run a typed quiz English → Spanish. Answer one with "cafe" and see whether it shows "café" as the proper spelling.
3. Finish a quiz and check the score matches what you got right.
4. Export on the laptop, then paste into Import on the phone. Check the card count matches.

Tell me if anything looks off on your phone. A screenshot helps.

## Prompt 4: you

Thank you, it's working well on my phone. Our class does a new topic each week, so I'd like to sort my cards into topics. When I add a card I want to pick its topic (like "Week 3: the house") or make a new one, and in both the Cards and the Quiz screens I want to choose one topic or all of them. Please put the starter cards into topics that fit them.

I've already added some of my own words on my phone, so they mustn't disappear when I put the new version online. If they don't have a topic yet, that's fine.

Then tell me which files you changed, so I know what to put online again.

### Claude

*[Claude saved the file `index.html`]*

I've added topics. The only file I changed is **`index.html`**, so that's the only one to put online again. I haven't been able to run it in a browser, so please check it on your phone using the list at the end.

## What's new

- **Adding a card:** There's a **Topic** dropdown with "No topic", your existing topics, and **➕ New topic…**. Choosing the last one shows a box where you type a name like "Week 3: the house". After you add a card, that topic stays selected, so you can add the whole week's words without picking it again.
- **Cards screen:** There's a **Topic** dropdown at the top. It offers "All topics" or one topic, and shows how many cards each has. It works with Shuffle and "Only cards I marked hard".
- **Quiz screen:** It has the same dropdown, combined with the existing options. For example, you can quiz yourself on "Hard only" cards from Week 3 only. Wrong choices in multiple choice still come from all your cards, so a small topic still gets four options.
- **Manage screen:** Each card shows its topic, and **Edit** lets you change it. Topics are sorted so "Week 2" comes before "Week 10".
- **Starter cards:** They're now filed under **Greetings and manners** (7), **Food and drink** (6), **Family** (4) and **Numbers** (3).
- **Backups:** Export and Import now carry topics. If you import a card you already have that has no topic, it takes the topic from the backup.

## Your own words are safe

- **Same storage:** I kept the same storage name as before, so the new version finds the cards already on your phone.
- **Old cards get "No topic":** The words you added yourself stay exactly as they are and appear under **No topic**. You can give them a topic later with Edit.
- **Starter words on your phone:** They get filed under their topics automatically, once. This only happens to starter words you haven't changed. Anything you edited is left alone.
- **Hard marks and deletions:** Your "hard" marks stay, and starter words you deleted stay deleted.

## Before you upload

1. **Download a backup first.** On your phone, go to Manage → Download file. Then if anything goes wrong, you can import it straight back.
2. **Upload to the same web address.** Cards are tied to the address, so a new address would start empty. If that happens, import your backup.
3. **If the page looks unchanged afterwards,** reload it, or close the tab and reopen it. A stale copy can be cached.

## Limitations

- **No rename:** There's no "rename topic" button yet. If you misspell a topic name, you'd need to Edit each card in it. Tell me if you'd like a rename button.
- **Empty topics disappear:** A topic is just the label on its cards, so a topic with no cards left vanishes from the lists.

## Check on your phone

1. Your old words are still there under "No topic", and the starter words are under their topics.
2. Add a card with a new topic, then add a second card and see whether the topic is already selected.
3. Pick that topic on Cards, then run a quiz on it.

---

## Prompt 5: you

Now I'd like to put it online so I can open it on my phone on the bus. I've made free GitHub and Cloudflare accounts. On GitHub I made a new repository called spanish-flashcards (I switched on "Add README"), and in Cloudflare I went to Workers & Pages, Create application, Pages, Connect to Git, and picked that repository, so it should go live by itself whenever the files on GitHub change. I don't want to use the terminal or install anything.

Please tell me, step by step, how to get the app into my repository using the GitHub website, what I should see at each step, how I find the address where it's live, how I get the cards I've added on my laptop onto my phone, and how I put a change live later (like the topics).

### Claude

Here are the steps. GitHub and Cloudflare change their wording from time to time, so a button may be labelled slightly differently. I describe what you should see so you can tell if you're on track.

**One thing to know first.** The online version starts with only the 20 starter cards. Any cards you've added so far are stored in the copy you've been using (on your laptop, and on your phone), not in the online one. Part 4 explains how to bring them across. Do that **before** you stop using your old copies.

## Part 1: Put the file into GitHub

1. Go to github.com and open your **spanish-flashcards** repository. You should see a file list with just **README.md**.
2. Click **Add file** (a button above the file list, on the right). In the menu, choose **Upload files**. You should see a big box saying "Drag files here to add them to your repository".
3. Drag **index.html** into the box, or click **choose your files** and pick it. The name must be exactly `index.html`, all lowercase. You should see it listed with a progress bar that turns into a tick or its name.
4. Scroll down to **Commit changes**. You can leave the message as it is, or type "Add the app". Make sure **Commit directly to the main branch** is selected.
5. Click the green **Commit changes** button. You should be taken back to the file list, which now shows **index.html** next to README.md.

## Part 2: Check Cloudflare and find your address

1. Go to dash.cloudflare.com and click **Workers & Pages** in the left menu. You should see your project listed.
2. **If it still asks you to finish setting up,** leave these as they are:
   - **Production branch:** `main`
   - **Framework preset:** None
   - **Build command:** empty
   - **Build output directory:** empty (or `/`)

   Then click **Save and Deploy**.
3. Click your project's name, then the **Deployments** tab. The latest one should say **Success**. Because you uploaded `index.html`, a new deployment should have started on its own. Give it a minute or two.
4. **Your address** is shown near the top of the project page. It looks like `spanish-flashcards.pages.dev`. It may have extra letters if that name was taken. Click it, or the **Visit site** button, and your app should open with the 20 starter cards.
5. If you see an error page, wait a minute and reload. The first deployment may have run before `index.html` existed. If it still fails, check that the Deployments tab shows a newer **Success**.

## Part 3: Open it on your phone

1. Type the address into your phone's browser, or email it to yourself and tap it.
2. **Bookmark it** (or use "Add to Home Screen" from the browser's share/menu button). On iPhone, a Home Screen icon can keep its cards separately from Safari. So pick one way of opening it and always use that. A plain bookmark is the simplest.

## Part 4: Bring your existing cards across

Your cards must go in through the **same way you'll open the app from now on**.

1. **On the old copy** (the double-clicked file on your laptop, and the copy on your phone if it holds cards you want), go to **Manage**. Scroll to **Back up or move your cards**.
2. Tap **Copy as text**. You should see "Copied!". Paste it into an email or message to yourself. (Or tap **Download file** and email the file to yourself.)
3. **At your live address,** go to **Manage** and scroll to **Import**. Paste the text into the box and tap **Import**, or use **From a file**.
4. You should see something like "Done: 12 new cards added, 20 already here". The starter cards are skipped, so they won't be duplicated. Your own words arrive with their topics.
5. Check the **Your cards** count at the top of the list matches what you expect.
6. Repeat for each device you use. The online copy on your laptop and the one on your phone are still separate, so use the same Export → Import trick to sync them whenever you like.

## Part 5: Putting a change live later (like the topics)

1. I give you a new **index.html**. Save it somewhere you can find it.
2. In your GitHub repository, click **Add file → Upload files**. Drag in the new `index.html`. It **must have exactly the same name**, which makes GitHub replace the old one.
3. Click **Commit changes**. You should see the file list again, with "index.html" showing a new "just now" time.
4. Cloudflare notices by itself. Within a minute or two, the **Deployments** tab shows a new **Success** at the top.
5. On your phone, reload the page. If it still looks old, close the tab and reopen it, or reload once more.
6. **Your cards stay put**, because the address hasn't changed. The new version reads the cards you already saved. It's still wise to tap **Download file** in Manage first, as a backup.

## Things to watch

- **Never change the address.** If you delete the Cloudflare project and make a new one, the address changes and the phone will show no cards. Import your backup if that happens.
- **Take a backup every week or so.** Clearing your browser history or site data deletes your cards. Safari on iPhone can also clear data for sites you haven't opened in about a week, and you'll be using it daily, so that's unlikely to affect you.
- **Private browsing won't keep cards.** The app shows a warning if saving fails.

If any screen doesn't match what I've described, tell me what you see (a screenshot helps) and I'll help from there.
