## Prompt 1: you

I help run a small community garden called Elm Street Community Garden. We have about 15 volunteers. At the moment we organise the jobs (watering, weeding, fixing the shed, that sort of thing) in a messy WhatsApp group, and things either get missed or done twice.

I'd like a simple app that all of us can open on our phones: a shared list of jobs where anyone can add a job, say "I'll do it", and tick it off when it's done. Everyone has to see the same list, so it needs to be saved online, not just on one phone.

I don't want people to have to sign up for accounts, but random strangers on the internet shouldn't be able to mess with our list. I'd like it to be free to run, and I've heard Cloudflare can do that.

I'm not technical and I've never made an app. Before you make anything, ask me anything you need to know, and tell me in plain English what you're going to make, where the list will be kept, and how strangers will be kept out.

### Claude

Happy to help. Here's the plan in plain English, then a few questions. I won't build anything until you've answered.

## What I'd make

A simple web page that works on any phone. Nobody installs anything from an app store. You send people a link, and they can add it to their home screen so it looks and feels like an app.

The page would have:
- **One shared list of jobs**, such as "Water the beds", "Fix shed door" and "Weed the front border".
- **Add a job**: type it in and press a button.
- **"I'll do it"**: puts your name on the job, so nobody else duplicates it.
- **Tick it off**: marks the job as done, and done jobs move out of the way.

## Where the list is kept

On Cloudflare's free plan. The page itself would be hosted on Cloudflare, and the list would sit in a small Cloudflare database. It lives online rather than on anyone's phone, so everyone sees the same list. For a group of 15 people, the free allowance is far more than you'll use, so it should cost nothing to run.

## How strangers are kept out

Without accounts, the usual approach is a **shared password** (a "garden code"):
- You pick one code, like a short phrase, and share it in the WhatsApp group.
- Each person types it in once on their phone, and the phone remembers it.
- The database only answers to people with the code. Someone who finds the web address but doesn't know the code sees nothing and can change nothing.
- If the code leaks, or a volunteer leaves, you change it in one place and tell everyone the new one.

This is not bank-level security. Anyone who has the code can get in, so it's only as private as you keep the code. For a volunteer job list, I think that's the right balance.

## Questions

1. **Names**: when someone says "I'll do it", should they type their name once (remembered on their phone), or would you prefer a pick-list of your 15 volunteers? The pick-list avoids typos like "Sue" and "Susan", but you'd need to maintain it.
2. **Cloudflare account**: do you already have one? If not, you'll need to make a free account (needs an email address, no card). I can't create it for you, but I'll walk you through each step.
3. **Who deploys**: I can write all the code here. Putting it online needs a few commands run on a computer with your Cloudflare login. Are you happy to do that with my step-by-step instructions, or is there a more technical volunteer who could help?
4. **Extra details on jobs**: do you want only a job title, or also things like a due date, notes or a category (watering, weeding, repairs)? Fewer is simpler.
5. **Taking a job back**: if someone claims a job and can't do it, should anyone be able to release it? I'd suggest yes, to keep things simple.
6. **Deleting**: should anyone be able to delete jobs, or should ticked-off jobs just stay in a "done" list for a while? Deleting is handy, but a mistaken tap can lose something.
7. **Look and feel**: any preferences, such as a name or colour scheme? Otherwise I'll go with a simple green design and big, easy-to-tap buttons.

If you aren't sure about any of these, say "your call" and I'll go with the simplest option.

## Prompt 2: you

Thanks, that sounds right. My answers:

1. Type their name once and the phone remembers it.
2. Yes, I've made a free Cloudflare account.
3. I'll do it myself, but I don't want to run commands or install anything. I've read that Cloudflare lets you paste code into its website and set up a database by clicking, so please make it so all I have to do is copy and paste.
4. Just a title for now.
5. Yes, anyone can hand a job back.
6. Anyone can delete a job, but ticked-off jobs should stay in a "done" list for a while so we can see what's been done.
7. Call it "Elm Street Garden Jobs". I've attached a screenshot of a website I like the look of. I like the light background, the rounded buttons with little coloured dots, and the one strong blue. Don't copy its words, just the feel. Big, easy-to-tap buttons please.

Please make it now. Keep it as simple as possible: just what I'll need to paste into Cloudflare, nothing I have to install. It must work well on a phone. Tell me in plain English what each file is for.

*[Attached: site-i-like.png]*

### Claude

I'll write two files: the app itself (one block of code to paste) and a click-by-click setup guide.

*[Claude saved the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude saved the file `SETUP.md`]*

I've built Elm Street Garden Jobs and written a click-by-click setup guide. I haven't run it. I couldn't run code here and I don't have access to your Cloudflare account. The code is written carefully, but expect to fix a small hiccup or two on first use. If Cloudflare's menus or the app misbehave, tell me what you see and I'll sort it.

## The two files
- **`worker.js`** is the whole app. You paste it into Cloudflare. It contains:
  - the page people see on their phones
  - the shared-list rules (add, "I'll do it", hand back, done, delete)
  - the check for the garden code
- **`SETUP.md`** is the guide. You follow it in your browser, with no installing and no commands.

You don't need a separate database file. The app creates its own list the first time it runs.

## How it works
- **Where the list lives:** in a Cloudflare D1 database, which is online and free at your size. Everyone sees the same list, and it refreshes itself every 20 seconds and when someone reopens it.
- **Keeping strangers out:**
  - People type one shared garden code the first time, and their phone remembers it.
  - The list is only handed over to someone who sends the right code. The code is stored as a hidden Cloudflare secret.
  - After 10 wrong guesses, that connection is blocked for 15 minutes.
  - Names are just labels. Anyone with the code could type any name, so it works on trust.
- **Your requests:**
  - Each person types their name once and the phone remembers it.
  - Jobs are a title only.
  - Anyone can hand a job back or delete it. Delete asks "are you sure?".
  - Ticked-off jobs stay in a "Done recently" list for 14 days, showing who did them and when. Then they tidy themselves away.
- **Look:** a light dotted background like the site you liked, rounded pill buttons with little coloured dots, and one strong blue. The buttons are big, and the text boxes are sized so iPhones don't zoom in.

## What you do
1. Pick a garden code, such as three random words.
2. Follow the 6 steps in `SETUP.md`:
   - create a Worker
   - paste in `worker.js`
   - create a D1 database
   - connect it with the name `DB`
   - add the secret `GARDEN_CODE`
   - open the link
3. Test it with a fake job, then share the link and code in WhatsApp.

The names `DB` and `GARDEN_CODE` must be typed exactly, in capitals. That's the most likely place for a slip.

---

## Prompt 3: you

Thanks. Before I put it online and share it with the volunteers, please check it carefully, as if you were a volunteer on a small phone screen and as if you were trying to break it:
- two people pressing "I'll do it" on the same job at the same moment
- someone ticking off or editing a job that another person has just deleted
- a very long job title, or a blank one
- someone typing odd symbols, web code or a script into a job title or their name
- a stranger who has the link but not the garden code, trying to guess the code or to read or change the list some other way
- a bad signal halfway through pressing a button

Tell me in plain English what you found, then fix it in the files.

### Claude

I'll re-read the code as an attacker and as a volunteer on a small phone before changing anything.

*[Claude saved the file `worker.js`]*

Now I'll update the guide to match the changes.

*[Claude edited the file `SETUP.md`]*

*[Claude edited the file `SETUP.md`]*

*[Claude edited the file `SETUP.md`]*

I read through the code looking for ways to break it, and found several real problems. I've fixed all of them in `worker.js` and updated `SETUP.md`. I still haven't run any of it, because I can't run code here. Please do the quick test at the end after you deploy.

## What I found and fixed

**Two people pressing "I'll do it" at the same moment**
- **Problem:** both would have been told they got the job, and the last one would silently overwrite the first.
- **Fix:** the first person wins. The second sees a message like "Bea just took that job" and the list updates.
- **Related:** if a stale screen tapped "Hand back" after someone else had taken the job, it could have released the wrong person's claim. Now it only works if the job is still held by the person the screen showed.

**Acting on a job someone has just deleted**
- **Problem:** the app said "OK" even though nothing happened.
- **Fix:** you now get "That job has just been deleted" and the list refreshes. Ticking off, un-ticking and claiming a job that's already ticked off are handled the same way.

**Very long or blank titles**
- **Blank:** a blank title did nothing, with no explanation. It now says "Please type a job first". Titles made only of invisible characters count as blank.
- **Too long:** a long title was silently cut off. The server now refuses it with a message. Long unbroken strings wrap on a narrow screen instead of pushing the page sideways.
- **Emoji:** an emoji at the cut-off point could be split in half. That's fixed.

**Odd symbols, web code and scripts**
- **Script injection:** this was already safe, because the page only ever displays typed text as plain text. A title like `<script>alert(1)</script>` just shows as those characters. I added a second layer: a browser rule that stops the page loading anything from elsewhere or sending data elsewhere.
- **Spoofed names:** I now strip invisible and text-direction-flipping characters from names and titles, so nobody can fake how a name displays.

**A stranger with the link but not the code**
- **No code, no data:** without the right code, every request is refused and nothing is revealed, including which parts of the app exist.
- **Short codes:** the app now refuses to run with a code under 10 characters.
- **Guessing limit:** I raised it from 10 to 20 wrong guesses per 15 minutes. It is only a speed bump, since a determined attacker spreading guesses across many connections could get round it. A long, unusual code is the real protection.
- **Capital letters:** phones add capital letters on their own, so the code now ignores capitals and stray spaces. This weakens it only slightly.
- **Odd characters:** a code with an odd character, such as a curly quote, would have broken the request completely. That's fixed.

**A bad signal halfway through a button press**
- **Stuck buttons:** a request that hung forever would leave the button stuck. Requests now give up after 15 seconds.
- **Duplicate jobs:** pressing "Add" again after a timeout could add the job twice. Retrying the same job can no longer duplicate it.
- **Failed taps:** after any failed tap, the app re-reads the real list and says "No signal, so that may not have gone through".
- **Offline banner:** if the list can't be refreshed, a yellow banner says what you see may be out of date.
- **Half-loaded replies:** a half-loaded reply can no longer blank the list.

## Small-screen problems I also fixed
- **Delete button:** it sat right next to "Done", and a mis-tap was easy. It's now small, on its own line, and needs two taps ("Tap again to delete"). I did the same for log out. Some in-app browsers block pop-up confirmation boxes, which could have made Delete stop working altogether.
- **Messages:** error messages now appear at the bottom of the screen. Before, they appeared at the top, where nobody scrolled down the list would see them.
- **Moving buttons:** the 20-second auto-refresh could redraw the list and move a button just as someone tapped it. It now redraws only when something has actually changed.
- **Login screen:** there's a "Show code" link, because typing a hidden code on a small keyboard leads to typos.
- **Other fixes:**
  - "Done today / yesterday" now follows calendar days and uses the server's clock, so a wrong phone clock can't mislead.
  - Phones in private browsing mode no longer crash the app.

## Limits that remain
- **Names are on trust:** anyone with the code can type any name.
- **Same IP address:** volunteers sharing one wifi share a guess limit. If you change the code and everyone on the same network uses the old one, they could briefly block each other.
- **Anyone with the code can delete jobs:** that's what you asked for. The 14-day done list is the safety net for ticked-off jobs, but a deleted job is gone.

## Quick test after deploying
Use two phones, or one phone and a laptop.
1. Press "I'll do it" on the same job at the same time on both. Exactly one should win and the other should see a message.
2. Delete a job on one device, then tap "Done" on it from the other.
3. Turn on airplane mode, tap "Add", then turn it off and tap "Add" again. The job should appear once.
4. Type a wrong code on a third device. It should refuse you and show nothing.

## Prompt 4: you

One more thing before we start. Some jobs need doing by a certain day, like "water the seedlings before Saturday's open day". Please let people add an optional "by when" day to a job, show it on the job, and put the ones that are due soonest at the top.

Imagine we've already been using the app for a few weeks, so it mustn't lose the jobs that are already on the list. Then tell me exactly what I need to paste into Cloudflare again to put the change live.

### Claude

I'll make the change so existing jobs are untouched, starting with the server side.

*[Claude edited the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude edited the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude edited the file `SETUP.md`]*

I've finished the edits. Next I'm re-reading the whole file for mistakes, since I can't run it.

The "needed by" day is built, and your existing jobs are safe. I haven't run any of it, since I can't run code here or reach your Cloudflare account. The upgrade logic is simple, but check it with the test below.

## What changed
- **Adding a job:** under the job box there's now an optional "Needed by a certain day?" box. Tap it and the phone's own date picker opens. A "Clear" link appears once you've picked a day.
- **On the job:** the card shows the day, for example "Needed by Sat 4 Oct". It turns amber when the job is due today or within two days, and red with "Overdue: was needed by…" once the day has passed.
- **Order:**
  - Jobs with a day come first, soonest at the top, and overdue ones above that.
  - Jobs with no day come next, newest first.
  - Ticked-off jobs stay in "Done recently", most recent first.
- **Extra I added:** a small "Set a day" / "Change day" button on each job. Your existing jobs have no day, and without this you'd have had to delete and re-add them. It opens a small panel with Save, Remove day and Cancel.
- **Bad dates:** a day that isn't a real calendar day, such as 30 February, is refused with a message.

## Why your existing jobs are safe
Your jobs live in the database, and pasting new code doesn't touch the database. The first time anyone opens the new version, it adds one empty "needed by" column to your existing list. It only adds, so it never changes or deletes a job. Your old jobs simply have no day.

It also works while the old and new versions overlap. Volunteers with the old page still open won't see an error. They just won't see days until they reopen the app.

## What to paste
You paste one thing, the new `worker.js`. The steps are also in the new "Putting an update live later" section of `SETUP.md`.
1. Open the new `worker.js` from this folder, select all and copy.
2. In Cloudflare, go to **Workers & Pages**, open your `elm-street-jobs` app, and click **Edit code**.
3. Click in the editor, press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac), and paste over the old code.
4. Click **Deploy**.

Don't touch the database, the `DB` connection or the `GARDEN_CODE` secret. Ask volunteers to close and reopen the app, or pull down to refresh.

## Quick test
1. Open the app and check that your old jobs are all still there.
2. Add a job with a day. It should show the day, and jump above jobs with no day.
3. Use "Set a day" on an old job.
4. Add a job due tomorrow and one due next week. The nearer one should sit higher.

I couldn't see how the date picker looks on a real phone. If it looks awkward on yours, tell me which phone and I'll adjust it.

---

## Prompt 5: you

I've made free GitHub and Cloudflare accounts, and a new repository on GitHub called elm-street-jobs (I switched on "Add README"). I'd like Cloudflare to put the app live by itself every time the files on GitHub change. I've read that Cloudflare can do this from Workers & Pages, Create application, "Import a repository". I don't want to use the terminal or install anything.

If Cloudflare needs any extra files for that, please make them. Then tell me, step by step, how to get the files into my repository using the GitHub website, how to connect it in Cloudflare, where the garden code goes and how I change it if it leaks, what I should see at each step, and how I put a change live later (like the "by when" day). Also, how do I keep a backup copy of the list now and then?

### Claude

I'll add the extra Cloudflare file, and a "download a backup" button to the app, because the Cloudflare dashboard has no simple backup button for the list.

*[Claude saved the file `wrangler.jsonc`]*

*[Claude edited the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude edited the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude edited the file `worker.js`]*

*[Claude saved the file `GITHUB-SETUP.md`]*

I've made the extra file Cloudflare needs and written a step-by-step guide. I haven't run any of it, because I can't reach GitHub or Cloudflare from here. Cloudflare's screens change names now and then, so if one looks different from my description, tell me what you see.

## What's in the folder now
- **`worker.js`** is the app, as before, with one addition: a "Download a backup copy of the list" link at the bottom.
- **`wrangler.jsonc`** is new. It tells Cloudflare the app's name, which file to run, and which database to connect. You edit one line in it.
- **`GITHUB-SETUP.md`** is the full guide, with what you should see at each step. The short version is below.

## The steps in short
1. **Make the database in Cloudflare first.** Name it `elm-street-jobs-db` and copy its Database ID.
2. **Upload `worker.js` and `wrangler.jsonc` to GitHub.** Use Add file → Upload files, then Commit.
3. **Edit `wrangler.jsonc` on GitHub.** Click the pencil icon and replace `PASTE-YOUR-DATABASE-ID-HERE` with your ID. Do this before step 4, or the first deploy will fail.
4. **Connect GitHub to Cloudflare.** Go to Workers & Pages → Create application → Import a repository, and pick `elm-street-jobs`. The project name must be exactly `elm-street-jobs`, matching the file. You should see a build log that ends in success and a `.workers.dev` address.
5. **Set the garden code in Cloudflare.** Go to Settings → Variables and Secrets, add a Secret named `GARDEN_CODE`, and put your code in as the value. The code never goes into GitHub.
6. **Open the address on your phone.** You should see the login screen, then an empty list.

## If the code leaks
In Cloudflare, go to your app → Settings → Variables and Secrets, edit `GARDEN_CODE`, and save. Then tell the volunteers the new code. You don't touch GitHub or any files.

## Putting a change live later
Edit or replace `worker.js` on GitHub (pencil icon, paste, Commit). Cloudflare notices and redeploys within about a minute. You can watch it under your app's Deployments tab. Your jobs live in the database, so they are never touched. If a change goes wrong, use Rollback on an earlier deployment in Cloudflare.

## Backups
Tap the backup link in the app and you get a spreadsheet file (`.csv`) of every job, with who took it, who did it and the days. I added it because Cloudflare's website has no simple backup button for this kind of database.

- **A record, not a restore:** if the list were ever lost, you'd use the file to see what was on it and re-add the jobs that matter. I didn't build a restore button.
- **Privacy:** keep the files somewhere private, as they contain first names.
- **How often:** I'd download one monthly and before any big change.

If you already deployed the app earlier by pasting code, tell me before step 4. You'd connect that existing app instead of creating a new one, so your list isn't left behind.
